Do food handlers legally need a medical?
Food safety law requires food handlers to meet personal hygiene and health standards, and food premises to hold a Certificate of Acceptability under Regulation R638. A worker health assessment supports that duty. The precise content of a food-handler health check is confirmed with the occupational health practitioner for your operation.

How often must food handling medicals be repeated?
It depends on the job and the exposure, and the Occupational Medical Practitioner confirms the schedule for each worker. We track every renewal date on one planner, so a certificate is re-tested before it lapses, not after.
What about cleaning and sanitation teams?
Cleaning teams are often exposed to hazardous chemicals and sanitisers, so they get a risk-based panel with surveillance matched to the exposure, in line with the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations. We keep the record audit-ready.
What must the worker bring on the day?
A completed risk-based exposure form from the employer. An ID or passport, since no examination can be done without identification. Glasses or hearing aids if used, and an audiologist report if applicable. Take chronic medication as usual, and avoid noise, food, sugar, energy drinks and smoking for one hour before the medical.
Can one worker come to a clinic?
Yes. One worker is enough. Do cold-store and forklift operators need a medical?
Yes. Cold-store and processing workers may face noise and biological exposure, and operators of plant such as forklifts and reach trucks are tested for the vision, hearing and reaction the machine needs. Where a forklift or listed lifting machine is involved, the Driven Machinery Regulations require the operator to be trained and certified, which rests on being medically fit.
