The law sets different retention periods for different records: some are kept for 5 years, and medical surveillance records for hazardous exposure are kept for 40 years from the date of the last entry, as the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations require. Paper records are easy to lose, hard to secure, and seldom survive these periods intact, which puts your POPIA compliance and your audit defence at risk. The law puts medical surveillance on the employer, whatever the size of the team. A fixed clinic carries that duty out for one worker or twenty, with the records to prove it.
The employer must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk to the health of employees. That duty applies whether you employ one worker or a thousand. The clinic gives even the smallest employer a place where that duty is met properly.

Do I need a booking, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome at all four clinics. If you would rather not wait, call for a booking and we keep a slot for you. If you are happy to wait, walk in, or try the afternoon, which is usually quieter than the morning.
When are the clinics busiest?
Our peak months are January, February, July, August, September and October, so expect delays in those months. Every day, the clinics are busiest in the morning from 8am to 2pm. To avoid a long wait, call for a booking or visit in the afternoon.

Can one person come for a medical?
Yes. One worker is enough. A new hire, a contractor needing a certificate for site access, or a driver needing a PrDP add-on can walk in or book at any of the four clinics.
Are the clinics open on Saturdays?
Saturdays can be opened for groups of more than 10 people, by booking. Call ahead, book your group, and the clinic opens for you on the Saturday, so your working week stays untouched.
What happens during load-shedding or a power cut?
We stay open. Our clinics run on inverters and generators, so testing continues through load-shedding. Unless a natural disaster or an unforeseen event closes a clinic, you can count on the door being open.
I booked, but I was not helped in my timeslot. What now?
Tell the clinic team straight away; we are problem solvers and we want to fix it on the spot. We will talk you through your options, such as being prioritised in the next available slot, moving to a quieter time the same day, or rebooking at a time that suits you. How long is a certificate of fitness valid?
One year from the date of issue. The prescribed Annexure 3 form itself states the certificate is valid for one year, and Care Net applies the same one-year validity from the first assessment date when a certificate is transferred.
What must I bring on the day?
A Man Job Spec form, or an Annexure 3 for construction (download here), completed by the employer. An ID or passport, since no examination can be done without identification. Glasses or hearing aids if used, and an audiologist report if applicable.
Take chronic medication as usual, and avoid noise, food, sugar, energy drinks and smoking for one hour before the medical.
Whose legal duty is medical surveillance?
The employer's. The OHS Act regulations are explicit: the employer shall establish and maintain a system of medical surveillance for all employees exposed at or above the limit. The fixed clinic is how even the smallest employer meets that duty properly.
Can a valid certificate move with a worker to a new company?
Yes, through Care Net's certificate transfer service, provided the job description, the risk exposure and the industry stay the same. The clearance remains valid for one year from the first assessment date, no matter how many times it transfers.
