Occupational health

Catch it early, while it is still reversible.

Occupational health is the branch of medicine concerned with preventing illness and injury that arise from workplace exposure. Medical surveillance monitors the health of workers exposed to hazards, so early signs are found while something can still be done about them.

What it is

Medical surveillance, in plain terms.

Medical surveillance is a programme that monitors the health of employees who may be exposed to hazards at work. It includes pre-employment medicals, periodic medicals, exit medicals, biological monitoring, physical checks and medical testing to identify early signs of illness. Based on the results, follow-up actions such as medical interventions and workplace adjustments are recommended.

Who carries it out

Our qualified occupational health professionals: audio and visual technicians, nurse technicians, Occupational Health Nursing Practitioners and Occupational Medical Practitioners. They measure and screen the results and provide guidance to prevent and manage illness.

What the outcome can be

Results can include fit for duty, fit with reasonable adjustments for marginal conditions, fit subject to review with restrictions, and in extreme cases job modification. Most outcomes are reversible with corrective treatment and lifestyle improvement.

Why it matters

What medical surveillance actually does.

To ensure employees are fit for their job
To identify early signs of work-related illness
To determine if employees need to be removed from a certain work environment
To ensure employees can seek appropriate medical treatment
To show whether the company's prevention and control measures are working
Not sure what your workplace needs?

Tell us the roles and the exposures, and we will tell you which medicals apply.

Ask us
When it is required

Four situations that trigger surveillance.

When there is a risk of exposure to hazardous substances
When exposure is likely to cause an identifiable disease
When an occupational health practitioner recommends it
When working in high-noise environments or with chemicals
Benefits

Good for the business, good for the person.

Medical treatment becomes more expensive by the day. Preventative occupational health screening identifies problems at an early stage, which reduces the cost and the human toll of long-term illness.
